La carrera rumbo al Óscar ya está oficialmente en marcha. La Academia de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas anunció que 317 largometrajes son elegibles para consideración en la 98ª edición de los Premios Óscar, de los cuales 201 títulos califican específicamente para competir en la categoría de Mejor Película, la más importante de la ceremonia.
De acuerdo con la Academia, estas 201 producciones cumplieron con requisitos adicionales de elegibilidad, más allá de los criterios generales de inscripción. Entre ellos se encuentran exhibiciones teatrales ampliadas y la entrega del formulario confidencial RAISE (Representation and Inclusion Standards Entry), que certifica el cumplimiento de al menos dos de los cuatro estándares de inclusión establecidos por la institución.
Además, para ser consideradas en Mejor Película, las cintas debieron completar una exhibición calificada en al menos 10 de los 50 principales mercados cinematográficos de Estados Unidos, dentro de un plazo máximo de 45 días posteriores a su estreno inicial en 2025. La Academia aclaró que la elegibilidad de algunos estrenos de fin de año permanece provisional, y aquellos filmes que no concluyan su corrida ampliada antes del 22 de enero de 2026 podrían quedar fuera de la contienda.
Los distribuidores y productores también tuvieron la opción de retirar voluntariamente sus películas de la consideración para Mejor Película. En contraste, para calificar en las categorías generales, los largometrajes debieron exhibirse al menos siete días consecutivos en una sala comercial de alguna de las seis áreas metropolitanas designadas: Los Ángeles, Nueva York, el Área de la Bahía, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth o Atlanta, entre el 1 de enero y el 31 de diciembre de 2025, con una duración mínima de 40 minutos.
La Academia recordó que ya se han anunciado listas cortas en 12 categorías técnicas y artesanales, mientras que el total de premios que se entregarán en la ceremonia asciende a 24 categorías. Todas contarán con cinco nominados, excepto Mejor Película, que mantendrá el formato de 10 candidatas finales. La votación se realiza mediante boleta electrónica secreta, con supervisión de la firma independiente PricewaterhouseCoopers.
El periodo de votación para las nominaciones comenzará el lunes 12 de enero y concluirá el viernes 16 de enero. Las nominaciones oficiales se darán a conocer el jueves 22 de enero, mientras que la 98ª ceremonia de los Premios Óscar se celebrará el domingo 15 de marzo en el Dolby Theatre de Hollywood, con transmisión en vivo por HBO Max para toda Latinoamérica.
La lista de películas elegibles para Mejor Película refleja una mezcla diversa de cine independiente, grandes franquicias, producciones internacionales y apuestas de autor, incluyendo títulos como Avatar: Fire and Ash, Mickey 17, Superman, Zootopia 2, Wicked: For Good, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Frankenstein, Hamnet, The Life of Chuck y The Smashing Machine, entre muchos otros, anticipando una de las temporadas más competitivas y eclécticas de los últimos años.
